Five shows you MUST watch from 2013 - Sarah Quraishi

Image

2013 comes to an end with surprisingly few climatic moments, unless you count the fact that ‘What Does the Fox Say?’ is still stuck in my head two months later, but brought around a year’s worth of fantastic television, whether with new episodes or repeats of old ones. Here are five television shows you should definitely be ending your year with:

(Spoiler alert though: This list doesn’t include Breaking Bad, because if you haven’t already watched it, you’re defying society’s norms in a way you totally shouldn’t be)

The Cupcake Theory - Alia Eva

DISCLAIMER: This does not apply to every guy/girl/situation (I came up with this while contemplating random stuff in shower and we all know how powerful the shower contemplation is) so kindly don’t come after me if your situation is different and if any of this offends you, because it was completely unintentional (maybe). Also the red velvet cupcake is an example, so don’t tell me about how you don’t like red velvet; you may insert a favourite cupcake flavor instead to allow it to make sense to you.

“That's what I consider true generosity: You give your all, and yet you always feel as if it costs you nothing.”

September 24th 2013, a day which brought devastation to thousands of innocent people living in Balochistan.  A day when families were broken and people were left hopeless,  broken and bruised.

One thing that the Pakistani nation is known for is not giving up and not backing down when tough times come upon them and like always, the whole nation became one to help their brothers and sisters in Balochistan and did whatever they could. Different organizations and individuals joined hands to help those in need in Balochistan to try to end their pain. The students of Nixor College were not going to back down either. Nixor College believes in helping the community because we believe that it is our duty to do so! This country, this community ,has given us so much and when in need, we shouldn’t back down from the fight! It started when the Student Governments Sub-Committee, GCC (Group of Concerned Citizens) decided to collect any sort of items whether it be clothes or food or even toys that could help the victims. They collected a decent amount of items and sent them to Balochistan through the NGO, Pakistan Relief Foundation. But we all thought that we needed to do more. We had to work more for all the victims, thus a number of AS students along with the GCC and the Student Government decided to have an event, an event that would help us raise funds for the victims of the devastating earthquake. That event, would not only provide all the Nixor sharks to spend some quality time with their friends but also simultaneously help raise funds for a good cause!

Are Gowns Essential?

Image

In almost all Pakistani schools and colleges, a gown or some other garment like a sash represents the leadership body that handles the institute and the student body, setting them apart from the rest of the school. Nixor College, however made history in January when The Class of 2013's Student Government voluntarily decided to forgo their gowns, creating a level playing field that does not differentiate leaders from the student body in any way. For the rest of gov2013's tenure, anybody walking in would not have been able to discern between leader and student except by observation of behavior.

To get an insight into changing this tradition and what it took to shift this paradigm, we approached the President of Nixor Government himself. We spoke to Arsalaan Allawala about the origins and process of the decision, why it happened and its perceived impact.
